Koen Luyckx: Discovering human emotions
My name is Koen Luyckx (°1976) and I am a self-taught amateur artist from Leuven, Belgium. During the day, I work as a psychology professor at KU Leuven. My artistic journey started back in April 2023.
My first pieces were mainly sculptures using mixed media (textile, clay, plaster, iron wire, foam) that depicted the duality inherent in human existence: lightness vs. darkness, creation vs. destruction, esthetics vs. deformity, emotion vs. ratio, …; they exist alongside one another.
As of October 2023, I started to paint, also as a way of coping with personal loss and grief. I quickly noticed that the same duality that characterized my sculptures was engrained in my paintings as well. They can be considered as expressive art that deals with human emotion (and the inherent contradictions present in them), with a melancholic undertone to them.
I mainly paint on canvas-textured paper (on different sizes, mainly 40X50cm and 50X70cm) using acrylic paint, oil pastels, soft pastels, and charcoal pencils. Many of my paintings represent a mix of these different media and I also like to explore different styles.
